PAUL HAYDEN KIRK AND THE RISE OF NORTHWEST MODERN

The first book on the father of Northwest Modern architecture. Five years of research, interviews with family and co-workers, and an inventory of Kirk’s prolific career (funded in part by King County 4Culture) provide the first comprehensive account of this influential architect.

The 272-page book measures 9.5″ x 11″ and is illustrated with hundreds of photos and drawings from the Kirk Archive at the University of Washington Libraries’ Special Collections. Included are several presentation drawings by the noted architect and educator Astra Zarina, who worked in Kirk’s office in the mid-1950s.

Paul Kirk’s residential and commercial buildings were widely covered in regional and national magazines. Photographs by Phyllis Dearborn, Charles Pearson, Art Hupy, and others illustrate Kirk’s best designs in their original condition.

Paul Kirk and the Rise of Northwest Modern is supported by grants from 4Culture, Docomomo USA/Wewa, and the Marion Dean Ross Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. Order your copy today!
